Sanborn Tenney

Sanborn Tenney, Vassar’s first Professor of Natural History, was born in Stoddard, NH in 1827. He graduated from Amherst College in 1853 and immediately began his teaching career. Twelve years later he came to Vassar College, where he published A Manual of Zoology in 1866. He was very popular among the student body. Tenney remained at Vassar for only three years before accepting a position at Williams College. He remained at Williams until his sudden death at 50 years of age in Buchanan, OH, while he was preparing for a exploring expedition in Colorado.
